Tribology is the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It involves the study and application of the principles of friction, lubrication and wear.

Daros piston rings work both theoretically and practically on obtaining new tribological knowledge about the piston ring liner system. When something is not working properly in the power cylinder of an engine, you will usually detect a micro-seizure, abnormal wear, heavy cylinder scuffing or ring failure in the piston ring. Therefore, port inspections and onboard cylinder liner inspections represent an important source of information for gaining new knowledge about the tribological function in the piston ring groove – piston ring – cylinder liner system.

Tribological test rigs

Rig testing is another way to evaluate the performance of new piston ring and cylinder liner base materials, heat treatment methods or coatings. Daros Piston Rings has several in-house test rigs, but we also cooperate with our customers and other research partners in tribological testing.

Tribological simulations

Advanced computational methods are required for predicting wear on piston rings and cylinder liners. These methods have reached such a mature level that we always use them at Daros for the development of our new piston ring packages.
